My parents grew up in New York. The concrete jungle is what they call it, and a jungle it is. I recall my father telling me stories about how his mom was worried about his safety just playing ball in the playground. Stories of him losing his best friend to gun violence was forever ingrained in his mind. Gun violence and gang initiation was the main reason why my father wanted more for himself. He found a love for music and became a DJ in local clubs. Somewhere along the beaten path he decided to become a secret service office and move his family out of New York where he wouldn't have to worry about their safety and security.
Violence is everywhere we turn, for no reason we lose lives, injure people, and risk everything. Mexico is the world second most violent country according to npr.org. With a homicide rate of 23,000 in 2016 it was the higher than violence in Syria. Most deaths are associated with small arms violence. A lot of the violence stems from drugs cartels which played a major role in the amount of deaths along with gang violence.
These tragic events make it hard for anyone to live in Mexico. I recall watching a show about the jails in Mexico. They are housed with various gangs and the violence that we remove from the streets takes place in the jails as well. This makes it a tough environment for a correctional officer to effectively secure and work. The domino effect is difficult to imagine. The increase of gang violence in the jail has decreased the amount of correctional officers which makes the jail unsafe for anyone.

Hi Jazmine, I agree that violence is everywhere. As a child, I didn't hear of so much violence. There were things I knew from the news but never like it is today. In my hometown in NC, there are murders almost every week. It is a small town with maybe 20,000 people. The violence is from young males in gangs. It's just heartbreaking to see the violence and loss of life over things that isn't worth it.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine how your father felt going out to just do fun things. I am sure he was constantly looking over his shoulders. I have heard of innocent people being attacked or robbed as well.I can't imagine what it's like for young children to be in an environment with violence. I am sure it is a stressor for them. It's interesting to know that violence as a stressor for children can affect development.
Good read, I know that violence does exist and I have family members that experience it in the home and even though their children are adults now I can see the effects that it has made on their life today. Personally in my home and where iI grew up I did not have the experience.
