Perspectives of Diversity and Culture

There were many different definitions of diversity and culture that I received. Some were quite amusing and some were more detailed than others. A close relative of mine would consider traveling the world and seeing lots of things a form of culture, while diversity could be defined as someone not acting "ghetto" or "boushy". While another acquaintance felt that understanding a persons background in reference to their mannerisms and way of life is a form of culture. My younger sisters fiance felt that diversity defines who a person is, it's the way they define themselves in the world. His family is originally from Germany and migrated to the United States to provide a better life for their family. All of the definitions that I listened to had touched on some form of diversity or culture. I think the biggest thing missing from the culture definitions were the customs that relate to a persons diversity. In all my discussions no one mentioned anything like this which surprised me because I thought that would've been the first thing mentioned.

Thinking about other peoples definitions has made me realize that everyone has their own interpretation of diversity and culture and that there is no one right or wrong definition. Listening to these three people talk about their views allowed me to expand my thought process on diversity and culture.

  1. For years I thought I knew what culture was but through this course I am learning that others view culture in different ways. What is affirming is that there is no right or wrong approach to culture. Culture is everything that defines society and each person is a apart of society.

  2. Hi Jazmine,

I love your statement that everyone has their own interpretation of diversity and culture, it embodies what we are learning about how everyone is different, and makes me think of how each of the responses could also be influenced by the person's own culture. Thanks for sharing!
