Concluding our course together

Fellow colleagues, it has been with great pleasure that I've been able to spend the last 8 wonderful weeks with you. As our journey continues throughout our educational, personal, and professional lives I wish you much success in all your endeavors.

My hope when working with diverse families and children is to gain a better understanding and respect for their culture. I seek knowledge in all forms from them and I hope the would be receptive to me in that manner.

My goal for the early childhood field in relation to equity, diversity, and social justice is to simply be aware and educate yourself. There has been a shift in all these areas and it's important in our field to stay up to date and to constantly educate ourselves. Without the knowledge for ourselves we're unable to help anyone else.

  1. Jazmine, I simply applaud you for the great time we spent together this 8 weeks. If knowledge really means power, then our colleagues really have a lot of it. Thanks for shining so bright and your contributions to the early childhood education field. See you soon, hopefully.

  2. Thank you for sharing. Respect that is a huge goal to have and keep. We never know who we are going to get and we never know what their background is. If we show respect for another thats a start to building a bridge to a positive relationship. Thank you for the work you do.

  3. Jazmine, I think after the past 8 weeks we have definitely gain the necessary deeper understanding and respect for cultures other than our owns. It was one of my main goals – to receive ALL and ANY information towards diversity and how it would/could be positive using it in the classroom.
I think, to be aware and to educate ourselves are very good goals. We have learned now that with everything else educational, diversity is a lifelong journey. A journey where every opportunity creates a lesson to be learned!
Thank you for sharing your post.

  4. Jazmine,
I think that we have all gained an abundance out of this course and we all have a clearer understanding of the important role that these core propositions have in the early childhood field as well as in the world. When you are learning and grasping it together in classroom setting it has made the learning experience even more important. Therefore, I thank you for sharing your goal of wanting to continue stay aware and educate this shows that you are on your way to becoming a strong anti-bias educator, as I think we all have that same feeling after this course.
My favorite motto from Derman-Sparks book was:
"Every day, in every action, we express our particular group culture and our individual relationship to our culture. Nothing is more important within a culture than how its children are raised" (Derman-Sparks, 2010, p. 51)

  5. Jazmine,

It has been a pleasure being in class with you as well. Also, thank you for adding that last point about staying relevant on what is going on not only in the field but around the world. That is one of the reasons I went back to school because things are changing all the time and is a good way to increase my knowledge.
