My international contacts name is Ty Nyu. She is from the Philippines and currently resides in a city outside of Leyte which is a rural city that suffers from extreme poverty. Their main source of income is farming and fishing are what keeps some food on the table for them. Jobs are hard to find in these areas. Ty informed me that many of her friends and family have done everything possible to get out of their country and go someone where there are better jobs, health care, and opportunities for their children. More than 80% of the people that live in rural areas are dealing with poverty and resources to help them aren’t readily available unless you live in the suburbs. Which depending on where you live in the Philippines it’s quite the commute to get there cost wise and time. Ty expressed to me that many families main concern were their children before themselves. Many of the rural areas are behind on the economic growth which has increased their underemployment rate. Reduction in fishing and farm lands has increased the amount of people out of work as well. As Ty stated, she’s deeply concerned about the future of her country and only hopes to see it make a drastic turn around. These are her people and she doesn’t want to see them fail.
Jazmine, I didn't know the main source of income in the Philippines is farming and fishing. After reading your blog, I began to think about the weather in the country. The first thing I pondered was how was the weather? Is the weather effecting crops in the country. It is heartbreaking to read about countries and the poverty situations. Also the fact that people are unable to leave impoverished countries for better lives. Thanks for sharing and giving me insight into poverty in the Philippines.

ReplyDeleteHi Jazmine,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing. I was unable to get in contact with a real person yet. I think when you talk with someone it makes it that much more real. How heartbreaking to hear these stories. We all need to do our part to create change.
